Nexium is used for the treatment of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) in adults. GERD is a chronic (long-term) condition that affects the esophagus, stomach, and lower esophageal sphincter (LES). The GERD can occur up to 10 years after the last dose of the medication, and symptoms are not completely resolved. However, if symptoms are not resolved, or if symptoms resolve within one year of the last dose, Nexium is recommended.
Nexium can also be used to treat acute pain in adults with acute reflux esophagitis. Acute GERD is a condition that affects the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) and esophagus.
